Green Tea, EGCG and Mental Clarity: What the Science Says

Ask people why they prefer green tea to coffee and many describe the same thing: alert, but calm. Researchers have spent years trying to pin down why. VapoCept includes a small amount of a highly purified green tea extract. Here's what's in green tea and what it means for this formula.

Three compounds that matter

  • Catechins, especially EGCG. These are green tea's main antioxidants. EGCG makes up the largest share and is the most studied.
  • Caffeine. A cup of green tea typically has about a third to half the caffeine of coffee.
  • L-theanine. An amino acid found almost only in tea, associated with relaxed alertness.

What studies show

Most studies showing improvements in attention from green tea involve the combination of caffeine and L-theanine, the pairing you get from a brewed cup. Research on EGCG on its own is mostly focused on its antioxidant activity, with human cognitive data still limited. Large population studies, particularly in Japan, have linked regular green tea drinking with healthier cognitive aging, but people who drink green tea also differ in many other ways, so this shows an association rather than cause and effect.

What VapoCept's green tea does and doesn't do

VapoCept contains 15 mg of green tea leaf extract standardized to 98% polyphenols, 80% catechins and 50% EGCG. That's about 7.5 mg of EGCG. Because the extract is almost entirely polyphenols, it contains essentially no caffeine or L-theanine. So VapoCept's green tea contributes antioxidants but won't give you the "cup of green tea" feeling. That's by design; the formula is stimulant-free.

If you enjoy the tea itself

  • Brew at around 175°F (80°C) rather than boiling to avoid bitterness.
  • Steep for two to three minutes.
  • Matcha, made from whole ground leaves, delivers more of everything, including caffeine.
  • Avoid green tea late in the day if caffeine affects your sleep.

Safety

Brewed green tea is safe for most people. Very high doses of concentrated extracts have been linked to rare liver problems, which is one reason VapoCept's small amount is sensible. If you already take a green tea supplement, mention both to your doctor.
